A practical eight-question review of learning design, distractions, privacy, and access

Try the product yourself, then answer all eight questions. “Not sure” is useful—it identifies what to investigate before a child uses the product.

1Clear learning goal

Can you explain the specific skill, knowledge, or creative purpose this experience supports?

Look for: A focused purpose that matches what the child actually does—not a broad “educational” label.

2Active thinking and creating

Does the child make meaningful choices, solve problems, explain ideas, practice, or create?

Look for: The child does the mental work instead of mainly watching, swiping, or following decorative prompts.

3Useful feedback

Does feedback help the child understand a mistake and decide what to try next?

Look for: Specific hints, examples, or retry opportunities rather than only sounds, points, or “wrong” messages.

4Appropriate challenge and control

Can the experience fit the child’s current level while letting them pause, retry, save, and exit?

Look for: Manageable challenge, clear navigation, and a genuine way out of every activity.

5Connection beyond the screen

Can the child talk about, demonstrate, or use the learning in another activity or setting?

Look for: Ideas that invite conversation, collaboration, movement, making, or application away from the device.

6Learning before engagement tricks

Is the experience free from unnecessary ads, purchases, autoplay, streak pressure, and distracting rewards?

Look for: Motivation comes mainly from the activity and growing competence, not pressure to keep clicking.

7Understandable, minimal data use

Can an adult tell what data is collected, why it is needed, who receives it, and how to delete it?

Look for: No unnecessary account, location, contacts, camera, microphone, behavioral advertising, or public profile.

8Accessible and inclusive design

Can the intended child perceive, navigate, and understand it without avoidable barriers or stereotypes?

Look for: Useful audio/text controls, readable visuals, multiple ways to respond, and respectful representation.

“Educational” is a marketing category, not evidence that an app or game fits a particular child or learning goal. A product can display letters, numbers, or historical characters while asking the child to do little more than tap, watch, and collect rewards. A plain-looking tool can support deep thinking when it helps a learner model an idea, practice with useful feedback, create something, or communicate.

The scorecard above turns that distinction into eight questions. Use the product yourself before answering, test every uncertain claim, and observe the intended child using it. The score is a comparison aid—not a certification of learning, safety, accessibility, or privacy.

Start with the learning goal

Write one sentence that begins, “The child will…” A useful answer names what the learner will understand, practice, make, or do:

  • The child will compare fractions by building visual models.
  • The child will rehearse decoding short-vowel words and receive corrective feedback.
  • The child will compose and revise a short piece of music.
  • The child will plan a sequence of commands and debug it.

“The child will have fun with math” is too broad to evaluate. “The child will earn stars” describes the reward system, not the learning. If the developer cannot state a clear goal, an adult should not have to reverse-engineer one from the app-store description.

Then check alignment: does the child’s actual action practice that goal? A multiplication app that makes learners spend most of their attention steering a character may be a racing game wrapped around occasional arithmetic. That does not make it automatically bad, but it changes the claim an adult can reasonably make about it.

Look for active minds, not busy fingers

Tapping quickly can look active while requiring very little thought. Strong learning experiences ask children to retrieve, decide, predict, explain, compare, revise, design, or create. The relevant action happens in the learner’s mind, not merely on the glass.

Try narrating what the child must think about. If the description is mostly “wait for the prompt and tap the matching picture,” ask whether physical cards, a book, conversation, or a simpler practice tool would do the same job with fewer distractions.

Open-ended tools can be valuable when their freedom serves a purpose. A drawing program might support storytelling, labeling, visual explanation, or design. The educational value comes from what the child makes and discusses, not from the presence of a digital canvas alone.

Test the feedback by making mistakes

Adults often test only the successful path. Choose several wrong answers on purpose. Useful feedback helps a learner notice what happened and try a better strategy. It might narrow the options, replay a sound, show a worked example, highlight a relevant part, or allow a thoughtful retry.

Weak feedback merely announces “wrong,” replaces instruction with celebration, or reveals the answer before the learner can reconsider. Points and animation can acknowledge effort, but they do not tell a child how to improve.

Also test whether the product mistakes speed for mastery. A child who understands an idea may need more processing, reading, motor, or language time. An unnecessary countdown can measure anxiety and navigation speed instead of the intended skill.

Check challenge, control, and stopping

The National Association for the Education of Young Children recommends looking for an experience that can be individualized, offers appropriate levels, and makes it easy for a child to get out of what they entered. Those questions remain useful beyond early childhood.

Try the easiest and hardest levels. Can an adult select an appropriate starting point? Does the product adapt transparently, or does one mistake drop the child into repetitive work? Can a learner pause, retry, save, skip an inaccessible item, and return to a clear home screen?

Then test the ending. Look for natural stopping points and a real exit. Autoplay, endless feeds, streak warnings, “limited-time” rewards, and repeated prompts to continue can turn stopping into a conflict by design. Separate learning from engagement tricks

Engagement matters; a tool nobody wants to use cannot help. But attention is not the same as learning. Ask what is holding attention and whether that feature supports the goal.

Watch for:

  • Advertising placed near child controls.
  • Characters or rewards that interrupt every response.
  • Locked content presented directly to the child.
  • Coins, streaks, loot-style rewards, or notifications that create pressure to return.
  • In-app purchases that affect progress.
  • Links that move a child into a store, video platform, chat, or unrelated website.

A “free” sample may be useful for adult evaluation, but families should know where the sample ends and what the complete experience costs. Schools should also consider the total burden of accounts, setup, device compatibility, support, training, and renewal—not only a headline price.

Ask what transfers beyond the app

A learning tool should leave the child with something usable after the device is put away: knowledge they can retrieve, a strategy they can explain, work they can share, or curiosity they can pursue.

After a short session, ask the child to show or tell what they did. Avoid a quiz-like tone. Try:

  • “What did you figure out?”
  • “Show me a part that made you think.”
  • “What did you try when you got stuck?”
  • “Where else could that idea be useful?”
  • “What would you change about the game?”

If the child remembers rewards but cannot describe the activity, that is useful evidence. So is the opposite: a child may apply an idea in blocks, drawing, conversation, outdoor observation, or later schoolwork even if the app’s production values were modest.

Treat “not sure” as a privacy pause

Do not enter a child’s information just to see what happens next. Before creating an account, identify:

  • Which data is collected, including identifiers, location, contacts, photos, audio, messages, and usage behavior.
  • Why each type of data is needed for the learning function.
  • Whether data is shared with service providers, advertisers, or other third parties.
  • Whether a child has a public profile, social feature, or direct messages.
  • How a parent or school can access, correct, export, and delete the data.
  • What happens when the account, class, or subscription ends.

The Federal Trade Commission explains that the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act gives parents control over certain information collected online from children under 13. That legal baseline does not tell you whether a product is instructionally useful, appropriate for a particular child, or the most privacy-protective option. A badge or policy link should not replace reading the relevant details.

For school use, follow district review and procurement processes. Teachers should not solve an unclear privacy question by asking families to create personal accounts independently.

Include accessibility in the first review

Accessibility is not an optional bonus added after a class adopts a tool. Test whether the intended learners can perceive instructions, navigate controls, understand feedback, and respond in more than one way when appropriate.

Look for readable contrast and type, captions or text alternatives, volume and narration controls, keyboard access where relevant, predictable navigation, adjustable pacing, and freedom from flashing or unnecessary motion. Check whether the product depends on fine motor precision, color alone, rapid reading, or one form of speech.

Representation matters too. Notice who appears as capable, curious, helpful, or in charge; whether disability, race, gender, language, and family life are treated respectfully; and whether customization creates stereotypes rather than genuine access.

Compare two products under real conditions

Complete the scorecard for each option rather than trusting memory. Use the same child, goal, device, and approximate session length. Record uncertainty honestly. A product with a lower total may still have one unique accessibility feature the learner needs; a high total cannot cancel an unacceptable privacy practice.

In a classroom, pilot with a small, representative group before broad adoption. Observe setup time, login failures, help requests, device performance, distraction, and what the teacher learns from any reporting dashboard. Ask whether the information changes instruction or merely creates more data to monitor.
