Fall School Testing: What Parents Should Know About CogAT

What the test measures, what the scores mean, and how to prepare without turning September into an exam season

The email usually arrives with dates, a test name and instructions about breakfast. It often leaves out the one thing a parent needs in order to make sense of any of it:

What decision will this test help someone make?

Fall testing can establish a starting point in reading or math, flag a child who may need support, screen a whole grade for advanced-learning services, or give a teacher another view of how a child approaches unfamiliar problems. Those are different jobs. A score that is useful for one may be almost meaningless for another.

CogAT—the Cognitive Abilities Test—is often part of this autumn alphabet soup. It is also one of the easiest tests to misunderstand. It is not a curriculum test, it is not an IQ label, and a high or low result is not a verdict on what a child can become.

Here is what to know before the testing window opens.

First ask what the test is for

The name matters less than the purpose. Most school assessments are doing one or more of these jobs:

A test can serve more than one purpose, and districts use the same assessment differently. “The school gives CogAT in October” tells you when. It does not tell you whether the result is one classroom data point, the first stage of gifted identification, or both.

That is why the most useful question is not Is this test important? It is What happens because of this result?

Is CogAT widely used in the United States?

Yes. CogAT is one of the country’s most widely used group ability tests. Riverside cites a 2019 Education Week Research Center survey in which 54 percent of districts said they used CogAT to assess students for gifted and talented services.

It is not a national test, however, and there is no single assessment every district must use. Other routes include:

  • NNAT3, a group-administered nonverbal measure of general ability for kindergarten through grade 12.
  • OLSAT 8, a group ability test with verbal, nonverbal and quantitative tasks.
  • Raven’s Progressive Matrices and other figural-reasoning measures.
  • Individually administered assessments such as the WISC-V, Stanford-Binet or Woodcock-Johnson cognitive battery, usually used for a closer evaluation rather than whole-grade screening.
  • Achievement measures such as MAP Growth, Iowa Assessments or a state test, considered alongside an ability measure rather than treated as the same thing.

These tests are not interchangeable. A nonverbal screener reduces the language demand but samples a narrower range of reasoning than CogAT’s three batteries. An achievement test tells a school what a child has learned, not the same thing as how they approach unfamiliar problems. An individual assessment can look more closely at a child, but it is not practical as a universal screen for an entire grade.

So if another parent in another state names a different test, that does not mean one school has chosen the “real” test and the other has not. It means the districts have built different identification systems. The fair comparison is between the whole systems: who gets screened, which abilities are measured, what other evidence counts, and whether there is another route for a child whose strengths the first measure misses.

What CogAT actually measures

CogAT measures learned reasoning abilities in three areas, called batteries:

  • Verbal: reasoning with words and the relationships between ideas.
  • Quantitative: reasoning with numbers and mathematical relationships.
  • Nonverbal: reasoning with figures, patterns and space.

Each battery contains three different kinds of question. A child might complete analogies, classify items that belong together, continue a number pattern, balance an equation, work out how a folded piece of paper will look when opened, or find the missing part of a figure matrix.

The important word is reasoning. An achievement test asks how much of the taught curriculum a child has mastered. CogAT asks how they use strategies and relationships to solve problems they were not directly taught.

That does not make it a culture-free window into an untouched mind. Reasoning develops through experience and instruction, and familiarity with language, devices and test directions can affect how readily a child shows it. It means only that CogAT is trying to measure something different from a spelling test or an end-of-unit math test.

Is CogAT an IQ test?

No. CogAT measures important parts of reasoning, but it does not measure the full range of thinking, memory and learning abilities covered by an individually administered intelligence assessment. Its Standard Age Score should not be relabeled as an IQ score.

It is also not designed to divide children into those who are “smart” and those who are not. Schools can use the pattern across the three batteries to understand the conditions under which a child may learn most effectively. A student whose quantitative reasoning is stronger than their verbal reasoning may need a different route into new material than a student with the reverse pattern, even if their composite scores are similar.

Some districts also use CogAT in gifted and talented identification. That is a use of the score, not the definition of the test.

The level number may not match the grade

CogAT levels are not school grades. The publisher recommends levels using the child’s grade, the time of year and, in some cases, the purpose of testing. A first grader can therefore take a test called Level 6 or Level 7 without being behind or ahead. For gifted identification, a district may choose the higher of two recommended levels.

The experience also changes with age. At the primary levels used in kindergarten through second grade, questions are largely pictorial and do not require the child to read them independently. Those levels are untimed and may be delivered by a proctor or audio. At higher levels, words and numerals take a larger role and the subtests are timed.

So before buying a grade-labeled workbook or opening a practice test, ask the school for the test level, form and batteries being given. “Third-grade CogAT” is not a complete specification.

How to read a CogAT score report

CogAT reports can put several numbers beside the same performance. They are different views, not separate test results.

Raw score is the number of questions answered correctly. It is the starting point, not the number used to compare children of different ages or test levels.

Percentile rank describes position in a comparison group. A percentile rank of 90 means the score was higher than the scores of 90 percent of students in the stated norm group. It does not mean the child answered 90 percent correctly.

Standard Age Score (SAS) compares a child with students of the same age in years and months. The scale has a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 16. It is not an IQ score.

Stanine compresses the distribution into nine broad bands. Five is the middle band. Because stanines are deliberately broad, a move from one to the next should not be treated as a precise measurement of growth.

Age and grade norms answer different questions. Age norms compare a child with same-age peers; grade norms compare them with students in the same grade and testing season. If the two percentiles differ, neither is automatically wrong.

The Ability Profile describes both the overall level and the pattern across Verbal, Quantitative and Nonverbal reasoning. That pattern can be more useful instructionally than the composite alone because it shows relative strengths and differences that an average can hide.

When the report arrives, begin with the labels: which battery, which norm group and which score type. A percentile without those labels is an invitation to misread it.

What score qualifies a child for gifted services?

There is no single national CogAT cutoff.

Districts and states define programs, select assessments and set their own identification rules. One may use a universal screener followed by more assessment. Another may combine CogAT with achievement data, classroom work, teacher observations or parent information. A third may use local norms or look separately at a strong battery score instead of requiring one composite threshold.

That variation is not a technicality. The National Association for Gifted Children recommends multiple measures and multiple opportunities for children to show strengths; one test on one morning should not carry the whole decision.

If the school notice says only that CogAT is “for gifted identification,” ask:

  • Is every child screened, or does someone have to refer them?
  • Is this the complete test or a shorter screening form?
  • Does the district consider battery scores, the composite, or both?
  • What other evidence enters the decision?
  • Is there another pathway if the score and the child’s classroom work disagree?
  • When and how can a family see the written identification policy?

Those questions will tell you more than searching for a universal qualifying percentile that does not exist.

Preparation that helps without score-chasing

There is a useful middle ground between sending a child into a completely unfamiliar format and turning the month before testing into test school.

Make the mechanics ordinary. A child should know how to select an answer, move between questions, listen through headphones and understand what “choose the figure that belongs” is asking. The publisher provides tutorials and practice materials for exactly this kind of familiarity.

Practice the item family, not a remembered answer. One figure matrix with feedback can teach a child to compare rows and columns. Twenty nearly identical matrices can teach guessing habits and anxiety. The point is to learn what the task asks and to try a strategy on a fresh problem.

Let wrong answers be useful. Ask, What did you notice? What rule did you try? What would you check next time? A reasoning assessment is a poor place to teach that uncertainty should be hidden.

Keep the ordinary protections ordinary. Sleep, breakfast if the child normally eats it, glasses, medication according to the usual plan, and an unhurried arrival do more good than a final-night practice session.

Stop before practice becomes a referendum. A child should not go to school believing this test will prove whether they are clever, earn a place, or disappoint an adult. Tell them the truth in child-sized language: These are puzzles that help the school learn how you think. Some will feel easy and some will not. Your job is to listen, try a strategy and choose your best answer.

Appropriate familiarity can help a child show their reasoning instead of their surprise at the format. It cannot turn a practice result into an official score prediction, and it should never promise admission to a program.

Eight questions to ask before test day

Keep the school email and fill in what it leaves blank:

  1. What is the exact name, form and level of the test?
  2. What is the school using the result to decide?
  3. Is every child taking it, or only referred students?
  4. Which batteries or subjects are included?
  5. Will testing happen in one session or over several days?
  6. What tutorial or practice will all students receive at school?
  7. How are language, disability and access needs handled?
  8. When will families receive results, and who can explain them?

If a child has an IEP, a 504 plan, a language-access need or a condition that affects testing, ask about the actual plan before the window begins. Do not assume classroom supports automatically transfer to this assessment, and do not assume they do not.

When the result surprises you

A score can be accurate for that administration and still be an incomplete picture of the child.

Start with context rather than a challenge: Was the child well? Did they understand the directions? Was the selected level what the district intended? Is one battery markedly different from the others? Does classroom work show the same pattern? What other measures are included?

Then ask what the school will do next. A low score that triggers useful support is more valuable than a high score nobody uses. A high score that opens a conversation about challenge is useful; one treated as a permanent label is not.

If the result affects placement, request the written criteria and timeline for review or appeal. You are not asking the school to disregard data. You are asking to see the decision that the data entered.
